You can consider the average number of visitors that come into your office each day or you can ask your receptionist to keep a count of how many people are in the waiting area each hour for several days. Keep in mind that children should be counted as well, and a stroller tally should be kept. If people with strollers normally visit the office, you will find that you want to have ample space left in your area for those strollers to be parked.

Very few reception seating areas are filled with chairs and nothing else. Some may have a TV hanging on the wall, and most will have at least a few end tables and maybe a coffee table, too, with reading material like current magazines stacked on top. You can also consider getting rid of a coffee table and adding a standing magazine rack to conserve space.
Room to Move
While you definitely want everyone who visits your office to be comfortable, you do not want to include so much reception seating that there is not space to move comfortably. You don't want to see your guests standing around waiting for their appointment or meeting, but you also don't want to see them constantly having to adjust their legs and move out of the way just to allow others to get by. So as you plan out your space, be sure to allow ample space for movement throughout the room.
