Shopping for Office Furniture: Tips for Buying Reception Seating

Whether you have a small office that does not regularly enjoy the pleasure of visits by professional colleagues and clients or you run a busy office with people constantly coming and going throughout the day, you will find that reception seating is highly important to your space. If you are shopping for new chairs for your office, there are some points you will want to keep in mind so that you can create a welcome, inviting, and comfortable space for everyone who visits your office.

Number of Chairs

One of the most important things to consider when purchasing new reception seating for your office is the number of chairs you will need. You can consider the average number of visitors that come into your office each day or you can ask your receptionist to keep a count of how many people are in the waiting area each hour for several days. Keep in mind that children should be counted as well, and a stroller tally should be kept. If people with strollers normally visit the office, you will find that you want to have ample space left in your area for those strollers to be parked.

Other Furnishings

Very few reception seating areas are filled with chairs and nothing else. Some may have a TV hanging on the wall, and most will have at least a few end tables and maybe a coffee table, too, with reading material like current magazines stacked on top. If kids are regular visitors to the office, a small play area or a kid-sized table and chairs with toys or books may be included in the space, too. These are important considerations, as they will limit the number of chairs you can put in your space.

If Space Is Limited

In many cases, the reception seating area will be limited in space, and you may find it difficult to accommodate the number of chairs needed in the space. Keep in mind that chairs can not only be placed against the wall, but they can also be placed back to back in the middle of the room, too. You may find that adding a couch can add seating to the space, and this is especially beneficial if families visit the office, as a family of four or even five can squeeze together on a couch and kids can sit on parents' laps, too. You can also consider getting rid of a coffee table and adding a standing magazine rack to conserve space.

Room to Move

While you definitely want everyone who visits your office to be comfortable, you do not want to include so much reception seating that there is not space to move comfortably. You don't want to see your guests standing around waiting for their appointment or meeting, but you also don't want to see them constantly having to adjust their legs and move out of the way just to allow others to get by. So as you plan out your space, be sure to allow ample space for movement throughout the room.

Sitting Up Straight - Correct Seating Posture

If you were to mention the words sit properly or correct posture, to somebody who is sitting in a chair, chances are you will get an instant reaction from people. That would be, an instantaneous correction in their seating posture. Unfortunately, most of the time the reaction may not be the correct one. They will go from a slightly hunched over seating posture to a more vertical posture. They may push their chest out a bit more or expand the shoulders. They will indeed correct themselves to a more "correct" sitting style.

The problem with this is that, after a while the back muscles will start to get tired and before they even realize it, they will go back to sitting the usual slouched posture. It's nobody's fault, it's just the way it is. In other words, it is human nature. When correct posture is mentioned, the most common image that pops up into people's mind, is the sitting perfectly erect or sitting in attention pose. This type of posture is not comfortable to hold for long periods of time, therefore it is impractical. Especially if you don't have the correct type of chair. The attempt to improve posture will be repeated for a long time without any success.

People who attend work and sit in front of a computer all day, and students, know this too well. In both cases, it can be seen as an act of laziness or even disobedience. This is not the case. The simple truth is that many chairs designed today are simply not good enough to help you with good posture while sitting in them. One of the hall marks of a poorly designed chair is a backward sloping of the chair, or the part you sit on. When you sit on this type of chair, the hips are forced to move backwards which in turn puts the hip joints out of order. Put simply, this type of seating position nearly makes proper seating posture impossible.

This is why people who sit in this type of chair tend to lean their chair forward. If the chair cannot be leaned forward, then they will try to lean their bodies forward. This tendency reflects the body's natural tendency to find a correct seating posture. However, this is also not a practical long term solution and as time goes by, bad seating posture will become habit forming. The point of all this is that it is time to find a chair that will help you with the right posture.

The first step towards this would be to find a chair that is the correct size or height for you. When sitting in the chair, the feet should not dangle and If the knees are higher than the waist, then it is too short. This is why it is important to have a chair where the height can be adjusted. While seated, the thighs should be parallel to the ground when the feet are placed on the floor. The height should be adjusted to achieve this. The calves, hips and shoulders should be in one line when sitting.

Next, the chair should allow the hips to touch the back of the chair. When sitting in the chair, it should allow you to keep the knees and feet together comfortably, or without any effort. The shoulders should be in a relaxed position. If all this can be achieved in the chair you are sitting in, then proper seating posture will naturally follow, without much effort. This means the back will be vertical, abdomen will stay relatively flat and the head will stay up. Good office chairs will be able to easily help you accomplish this.

The Importance of Proper Seating and a Good Office Chair for Your Health

Ask yourself: how much time do you spend in front of your computer, and do you think about the position of your body at that time? Right now, while reading this, pay attention to your body - are you sitting properly, is your back in an upright position and is your spine straight? In the times we live, computer users tend to spend many hours in front of their computers, and that time is constantly increasing.

Laptop computers are used more and more these days. People are holding them on their knees, on the sofa, on the floor, and in various odd positions that currently provide comfort, without thinking about lifelong consequences it could have for their health. While the laptop is used outside of work / computer table, the screen is often below the horizon of sight so you need to bow your head, which is not good for your spine.

Your spine is not made of steel, and certainly, you do not want to spend your free time in medical resorts later on in your life, because of something that can be corrected now. So, you really need to think about your body posture while working on your computer, regardless of whether it is a desktop or laptop computer.

A few tips for proper seating:

- Keep your spine straight
- Hold your legs in comfortable position
- Relaxed shoulders and arms
- Comfortable position of the hands and fingers
- Reduce the tilting of the head and hold the screen in front of you, not on the side
- Reduce eye strain
- Make the occasional break, it is desirable to look out the window and focus on distant objects

No matter what, avoid sitting for a long time in front of your computer and occasionally get up, stretch your legs and rest your eyes.

An important element that can cause or prevent diseases of the spine, neck, arms and legs is chair. Sitting on the comfortable ergonomic chairs is healthier for your back and spine because it provides support for the back and so it keeps your back flat, providing you a proper and comfortable position while working. Whereas it is essential that the upper part of the screen is at eye height, ergonomic chair should be adjusted so your elbows bent at 90 degrees.

Chair has to be carefully selected, of recognized brand guaranteeing quality and durability, so you should not skimp on this piece of office furniture, as it is a good investment.
